It was a cool summer morning in 2006 when I arrived, as usual, to pick Steph up and drive her to work that day. She had no idea I had already made arrangements for her to have the day off! I started driving and handed her a card with a note inside. It had a riddle, and the answer lead us to the coffee shop where we had our first date.
After a round of cafe lattes at the coffee shop, I handed her a second card. The clue inside lead us to our next destination, a paddle boat rental shop! In our first few years of dating, we would often rent paddle boats on Sunday afternoons and feed the ducks. We set out on the water, but soon discovered our boat had a slow leak that was going to eventually sink us. We slowly made our way back to shore, (I think Steph wasn't paddling because she was laughing too hard), and made it back just in time to see the water spill over our seats! It was hilarious!
For the rest of the day, I kept giving Steph cards, which took us all over the city to all of our favorite places, and a few we had never been to.
Finally, we arrived at the beach where Steph and I would always go for walks and have some of our best talks. I began to tell her how much she meant to me, and that I hoped our love would continue to grow forever. I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. Steph cried (she was so happy), and of course, she said yes!
To this day, Steph swears that she had no idea I was planning to propose that day. Everything worked out better than I had planned...and it was truly a day we will remember forever.
